BiographyI am a Visiting Professor at the Earth Sciences Department of the University of Oxford, where I have been since 2013. I have established research interests in continental tectonics, basin evolution and mineral resource systems, with particular focus on Africa and South America. I am a Co-PI on the UKRI/NERC funded Copper Basin Exploration Science (CuBES) project. In Oxford I have a small teaching commitment, involving co-leading academic and industrial field classes in tectonics and stratigraphy, co-supervise PhD and Master's students and give guest seminars at Oxford’s Saïd Business School.
After graduating I joined the Geological Survey of Zambia as a field geologist, mapping the Proterozoic Irumide fold belt of the Muchinga Mountains and the Luangwa Rift Valley of northern Zambia. I also participated in UNESCO field mapping projects in Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi and the DRC. I followed this with a 28 year career with BP Exploration Plc. Initially appointed as a structural geologist, after a series of geoscience and international exploration leadership roles, I spent 8 years as BP’s Head of Exploration and new business development, and served on BP’s Group Executive Team. As of 2020 I am a non-executive board member of Tullow Oil and CGG, a French Geoscience Company and run my own company supporting mining and petroleum exploration projects in South America and Africa. In 2019 I was elected President of The Geological Society, a two year tenure commencing in 2020. |
